1. He walked as though he was slightly lame.

2. He walked as though he were slightly lame.

Please tell me which sentence is correct.

As I do not understand from where this strange conflict in english grammar arrived, readers
please clarify why there is a conflict between the two sentences.

And confusing people, when both answers are correct.
Logic and Literature, combined together do make good. But Logic and Grammar are as different as water and fire.(Both of them are elements though)

As far as I know, first one is correct. One can't use were with 'he'.
